Train for Life

by Coach Josh

The Fortem Philosophy

If I could give almost every person one piece of advice that would improve their health, confidence, and quality of life, it would be surprisingly simple.

Just show up more.

Not perfectly.

Not every day.

Just more than you do now.

After years of coaching classes, meeting with members, and watching people transform their lives, I’ve become convinced that lasting change almost never comes from one big decision.

It comes from hundreds of small ones.

One workout.

One healthy meal.

One conversation with a coach.

One extra walk.

One early bedtime.

One decision to come in even when you don’t really feel like it.

Those decisions don’t seem significant in the moment.

But over time, they completely change the direction of your life.

That’s really the heart behind Fortem.

We Were Never Trying to Build a Gym

When Jackie and I took over Fortem, our goal wasn’t simply to create a place where people could work out.

There are plenty of gyms.

We wanted to build a place that helps people become healthier, stronger, and more capable so they can enjoy life more and better care for the people around them.

That’s what we mean when we say Train for Life.

It’s not just something we put on a shirt or a wall.

It’s why we coach the way we do.

It’s why we care about more than what happened during today’s workout.

Because the workout isn’t the goal.

Your life is.

Why We Believe in CrossFit

People often ask why we believe so strongly in CrossFit.

The answer is actually pretty simple.

We believe it’s one of the best models for preparing people for real life.

Life doesn’t ask us to be good at one thing.

It asks us to be ready for all kinds of things.

To pick up heavy boxes.

Run after our kids.

Climb a ladder.

Carry groceries.

Help a friend move.

Play sports.

Hike on vacation.

Get off the floor without thinking about it.

Recover from setbacks.

Adapt when life changes.

That’s what CrossFit has always been about.

Preparing for the unknown and unknowable.

Not creating specialists.

Creating capable people.

That’s why we continue to build everything we do around the CrossFit methodology.

Fitness Is Bigger Than Looking Fit

One of my favorite ideas from CrossFit is the question:

What is fitness?

Most people answer that by talking about abs or body fat or how much someone can lift.

CrossFit gives a much bigger answer.

Fitness is increasing your capacity.

Your ability to do more.

To handle more.

To recover better.

To continue doing the things you love for more years of your life.

That’s the kind of fitness we’re after.

Not fitness that looks good for summer.

Fitness that serves you for life.

Health Starts Before You Walk Into the Gym

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that an hour in the gym can’t undo the other twenty-three.

That’s why nutrition sits at the foundation of everything.

Not because we’re trying to make eating complicated.

But because it’s one of the greatest opportunities we have to improve our health.

It’s also why we talk about sleep.

Recovery.

Stress.

Body composition.

InBody scans.

Blood work.

These aren’t separate conversations.

They’re all connected.

Health is built long before the workout starts.

Our goal is to help people understand that, not overwhelm them with it.

Small improvements, practiced consistently, have a way of changing everything.

Just Keep Showing Up

One of the coolest things about coaching is watching people change.

Rarely because of one incredible workout.

Usually because they simply didn’t quit.

The members who make the biggest changes aren’t always the most athletic.

They’re the ones who keep showing up.

When work gets busy.

When the kids don’t sleep.

When motivation disappears.

When progress feels slow.

They come anyway.

Three workouts probably won’t change your life.

Three hundred just might.

Every workout is another vote for the kind of person you’re becoming.

Someone who does hard things.

Someone who keeps promises to themselves.

Someone who doesn’t let comfort make their decisions.

That’s a person who’s becoming stronger in more ways than one.

Growth Usually Feels Uncomfortable

Nobody walks into the gym already knowing how to squat, clean, do pull-ups, or feel confident.

Those things are learned.

The same is true in life.

Growth almost always asks us to do something that’s uncomfortable before it becomes familiar.

Learning new skills.

Trying something you’re not good at.

Being coached.

Showing up when you don’t feel like it.

Those moments are where confidence is built.

Not because they’re easy.

Because you made it through them.

One of the greatest gifts training gives us is the reminder that we’re capable of more than we often believe.

We Want You Healthy for Decades

We’re not interested in helping someone get in shape for twelve weeks.

We want people to be healthy ten, twenty, and thirty years from now.

Strong enough to pick up their grandkids.

Healthy enough to travel.

Confident enough to try new things.

Independent enough to enjoy life as they get older.

Training today is one of the greatest investments you can make in the future version of yourself.

That’s why consistency matters so much.

You’re not just training for today’s workout.

You’re training for the life you want to live years from now.

People Need People

Something else we’ve learned over the years is that people rarely stay consistent alone.

They stay consistent because someone notices when they aren’t there.

Someone encourages them.

Someone celebrates a PR.

Someone checks in after a hard season.

Community isn’t something extra we offer.

It’s one of the reasons people succeed.

That’s why we love Friday Night Lights.

Murph.

Fortem Fest.

Kids classes.

Conversations before and after class.

Coffee after workouts.

Those moments matter just as much as the workouts themselves.

People need people.

Why We Offer Everything Else

Sometimes people wonder why we have so many resources outside of class.

Why Beyond the Whiteboard?

Why nutrition coaching?

Why coach check-ins?

Why InBody scans?

Why one-on-one coaching?

Why Fortem Talk?

Why the monthly newsletter?

Why recipes, accessory work, gymnastics progressions, and monthly challenges?

Because we don’t believe one hour in the gym is enough to change someone’s life.

Health is built through hundreds of small decisions.

Our job is to give you as many tools as we can to help you make those decisions a little easier.

You don’t have to use every resource.

But we want you to know they’re there because we genuinely want to help you succeed.

The Fortem Way

So if someone asked me what The Fortem Way is, I’d probably keep it pretty simple.

Show up.

Be coachable.

Focus on the basics.

Eat well.

Train consistently.

Measure your progress.

Keep learning.

Lean into community.

Do hard things.

Think long term.

And remember that the goal was never to become better at working out.

The goal is to become the kind of person who is healthier, stronger, more capable, and better prepared for whatever life brings.

That’s who we want to help build.

That’s why Fortem exists.

That’s why we coach.

That’s why we keep showing up every day.

Fitness is the vehicle.

Life is the destination.

Train for Life.
